The Act of Salvation: Christ on the Cross
There should be no doubt in any Christian that Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the crucifixion was used as a way of death and punishment. It was an old method of shamefully parading political or religious agitators, pirates, enslaved people, or people without citizenship rights. In summary, it was a public political death that portrayed all the state’s power over those considered as outlaws, social menace, or outsiders. It was an instrument of public terror and deterrence for possible offenders. The level of violence started by this act of savagery is still without parallel. To have an idea, this is the way described by the Britannica, “Usually, the condemned man, after being whipped, or “scourged, ” dragged the crossbeam of his cross to the place of punishment, stripped of his clothing either then or earlier at his scourging, he was bound fast with outstretched arms to the crossbeam or nailed firmly to it through the wrists. Over the criminal’s head was placed a notice stating his name and his crime. Death ultimately occurred through a combination of constrained blood circulation, organ failure, and asphyxiation as the body strained under its own weight.”
